Labor Team: new diagnostics service in the Galenica network

Spotlights

Shaping the future

With Labor Team, Galenica is not only gaining a leading Swiss diagnostic service provider, but also a partner who wants to work with us to systematically develop the healthcare sector. The acquisition brings diagnostics, treatment and care closer together.

Around 70 per cent of medical diagnoses are based on laboratory findings. Diagnostic providers are therefore an important part of the healthcare system. Labor Team is the fourth-largest provider in the Swiss laboratory market, which has a volume of around CHF 3 billion, and is also one of the most innovative. Founded in 2001, the laboratory has been consistently combining medical expertise with digitalisation, automation and innovation since it was taken over by the new management team in 2021. “Since 2021, we have been focusing on technological innovation in order to maintain top quality and efficiency and ensure future growth through scalability,” emphasises Dr. med. Alain M. Cahen, CEO of Labor Team.

Highly automated infrastructure in Goldach

In Goldach in the canton of St.Gallen, Labor Team operates one of the most modern facilities for laboratory medicine and pathology, where well over seven million analyses are carried out every year. In early 2025, the company put the second of three planned automation projects into operation. In the so-called “CoreLab”, individual samples are transported autonomously from reception to diagnostics and on to the archive. The highly automated processes increase efficiency and precision and enable scalability. At the same time, people remain essential, for example in technical assessment, quality assurance and close cooperation with the referring physicians. They can choose from well over 2,000 medical laboratory tests and all the services offered by the pathology institute as well as from a wide range of accompanying services. The range of services is constantly growing: in the last three years alone, Labor Team has launched 15 tests in key health areas, including a highly reliable test for the early detection of endometriosis and a radiation-free test for risk assessment and treatment monitoring in osteoporosis. “Our innovative strength is unique in Switzerland. Even university hospitals commission us to carry out analyses,” says Alain M. Cahen.

Collaboration with Galenica as an opportunity

In association with Galenica, Labor Team’s strengths can have an even greater impact. “Galenica is expanding our potential customer portfolio and we are creating joint offers for existing and new customers,” highlights Alain M. Cahen. Conversely, Labor Team’s market positioning strengthens Galenica’s further expansion of its offerings in the medical market. In this way, we are continuing to drive forward interconnectivity in the healthcare sector and strengthening healthcare services for patients in Switzerland.

Certified sustainability

Labor Team is also leading the way in terms of sustainability: it is the only medical laboratory in Switzerland to be certified as a “Green & Sustainable Laboratory”. The company relies primarily on bicycle couriers and the railroad for its logistics. This saves more than 1,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. The new automated laboratory line combines high-tech with energy-efficient infrastructure – including heat recovery from analysis equipment and resource-saving cooling of the compressors of all cooling units using water from the surrounding area.
